Strengthening multiculturalism in the Territory

Published

Territory Families recently launched the Multicultural Policy 2020-25, which outlines the objectives, outcomes and actions that will increase and strengthen multiculturalism in the NT.

The policy builds on current programs and outlines initiatives that support community cohesion and positive participation in the social, economic and civic life of the NT.

Its four key objectives are designed to achieve positive outcomes for the NT’s diverse communities.

  • Building Our Diversity to enhance the Territory’s population by supporting and promoting settlement in the Northern Territory.
  • Strengthening Our Partnerships with a range of stakeholders, to ensure people from multicultural communities have the services and support they need.
  • Supporting Participation, Social Inclusion and Cohesion in Our Community to enable the multicultural community to engage in all aspects of life in the Northern Territory, including employment.
  • Strengthening Our Community through capacity building, fostering mutual respect and enabling the learning about and celebrating and sharing of our cultural diversity.

The policy was developed in consultation with key service providers and members of the multicultural community in addition to the Minister’s Advisory Council on Multicultural Affairs.

It was launched at the Multicultural Council of the Northern Territory’s office in Malak with a number of key service providers in attendance.

Multiculturalism brings significant social and economic benefits to the community. Our multicultural communities contribute to community development, strengthen families, and support social cohesion and inclusion in the Territory.
