Draft Multicultural Policy Open for Public Comment

A draft policy, recognising and supporting the strengths and positive contribution of multiculturalism in the Northern Territory, is open for public comment. The Draft Multicultural Policy for the Northern Territory 2020–2025 is part of the Government’s vision for a strong and diverse multicultural Territory.

The draft policy is underpinned by the principles of valuing our diversity, supporting accessibility, ensuring participation and inclusion as well as strengthening mutual respect and social cohesion.

The draft policy has a number of objectives to support positive outcomes for the migrant and multicultural community in the Northern Territory including:

  • to build the Territory’s diverse population by supporting and promoting settlement in the Northern Territory;
  • strengthening partnerships with a range of stakeholders to ensure people from multicultural communities have the services and support they need;
  • supporting participation to enable the multicultural community to engage in all aspects of life in the Northern Territory; and
  • strengthening the community by enabling the learning, celebrating and sharing of cultures.

Territory Families Chief Executive Ken Davies said enabling the public and key stakeholders to provide feedback on the new draft policy is a great way to involve the community and identify ways in which our diversity can make us stronger.

“With one in five Territorians born overseas, we are part of an incredibly vibrant and multicultural community,” he said.

“Through the development of the draft policy we strive to engage, celebrate and support migrants and the multicultural community in the Northern Territory.”

The Draft Multicultural Policy for the Northern Territory 2020-2025 is available for feedback on the Have Your Say website.

A public consultation session was recently held in Katherine and future sessions will occur in Darwin on 4 December 2019 and Alice Springs on 5 February 2020.
