Aboriginal Carers for Aboriginal Children Grants

Grant funding is now available for Aboriginal Controlled Organisations to help find, assess and support Aboriginal Carers for Aboriginal Children in Care.

The Northern Territory Government wants children to stay safely at home with their families and communities but sometimes this is not possible. When Aboriginal children need to be removed from their parents to keep them safe, Aboriginal Carers (including grandparents, aunties or uncles, or other community members) play a very important role in looking after them.

Aboriginal children who cannot live safely at home should be cared for by their extended families or community members wherever possible, so they remain connected to their culture, kin and country.

What’s happened so far?

In late 2018, Phase 1 – Aboriginal Carers Growing Up Aboriginal Children resulted in two organisations receiving pilot funding to provide these services:

  • Ngurratjuta Pmana/Ntjarra - $150 000 for 9 months in the Central Western Desert Region
  • Larrakia Nation - $150 000 for 9 months in Darwin.

Tangentyere Council was also funded to develop the Children Safe, Family Together model to support delivery of Aboriginal Carer support services across the NT. This model provides further information about the services we are asking ACCOs to deliver.

Who can apply?

We want Aboriginal Community Organisations to lead the important work to find, prepare and support Aboriginal Carers to look after Aboriginal children. Funding is only available to ACOs. Non-Aboriginal organisations may partner or provide support, but the primary applicant must be an ACO.

What can you apply for?

In 2019/20, $350 000 additional funding is available for organisations to provide Aboriginal Carer Services.

Organisations can apply for any amount up to $350 000. Their application should identify what services they will provide to which communities. The service types are:

  • Stage 1: Finding and Engaging Carers
  • Stage 2: Support Carer Assessment
  • Stage 3: Placement Setup
  • Stage 4: Supporting Carers

When do I apply?

Applications are open till 30 September 2019 at 5pm
